Home-ownership as a social norm and positional good: subjective well-being evidence from panel data
Much attention has been devoted to examining the absolute benefits
of home-ownership (e.g. security and autonomy). This paper by contrast is
concerned with conceptualising and testing the relative benefits of homeownership;
those benefits that depend on an individual’s status in society.
Home-ownership has previously been analysed as a social norm, implying that
the relative benefits (costs) associated with being an owner (renter) are
positively related to relevant others’ home-ownership values. The theoretical
contribution of this paper is to additionally conceptualise home-ownership as a
positional good, implying that the status of both home-owners and renters is
negatively related to relevant others’ home-ownership consumption.
The empirical contribution of this paper is to quantitatively test for these relative
benefits in terms of subjective well-being. We run fixed effects regressions on
three waves of the British Household Panel Study. We find that i) a strengthening
of relevant others’ home-ownership values is associated with increases
(decreases) in the subjective well-being of home-owners (renters), and ii) an
increase in relevant others’ home-ownership consumption decreases the life
satisfaction of owners but has no effect for renters.
Overall our findings suggest that i) the relative benefit of home-ownership are
both statistically significant and of a meaningful magnitude, and ii) homeownership
is likely to be both a social norm and a positional good. Without
explicitly recognising these relative benefits, policymakers risk overestimating
the contribution of home-ownership to societal well-being

Organisational justice:new insights from behavioural ethics
Both organizational justice and behavioural ethics are concerned with questions of 'right and wrong' in the context of work organizations. Until recently they have developed largely independently of each other, choosing to focus on subtly different concerns, constructs and research questions. The last few years have, however, witnessed a significant growth in theoretical and empirical research integrating these closely related academic specialities. We review the organizational justice literature, illustrating the impact of behavioural ethics research on important fairness questions. We argue that organizational justice research is focused on four reoccurring issues: (i) why justice at work matters to individuals; (ii) how justice judgements are formed; (iii) the consequences of injustice; and (iv) the factors antecedent to justice perceptions. Current and future justice research has begun and will continue borrowing from the behavioural ethics literature in answering these questions
Cooperation, Norms, and Revolutions: A Unified Game-Theoretical Approach
Cooperation is of utmost importance to society as a whole, but is often
challenged by individual self-interests. While game theory has studied this
problem extensively, there is little work on interactions within and across
groups with different preferences or beliefs. Yet, people from different social
or cultural backgrounds often meet and interact. This can yield conflict, since
behavior that is considered cooperative by one population might be perceived as
non-cooperative from the viewpoint of another.
To understand the dynamics and outcome of the competitive interactions within
and between groups, we study game-dynamical replicator equations for multiple
populations with incompatible interests and different power (be this due to
different population sizes, material resources, social capital, or other
factors). These equations allow us to address various important questions: For
example, can cooperation in the prisoner's dilemma be promoted, when two
interacting groups have different preferences? Under what conditions can costly
punishment, or other mechanisms, foster the evolution of norms? When does
cooperation fail, leading to antagonistic behavior, conflict, or even
revolutions? And what incentives are needed to reach peaceful agreements
between groups with conflicting interests?
Our detailed quantitative analysis reveals a large variety of interesting
results, which are relevant for society, law and economics, and have
implications for the evolution of language and culture as well
Social exchange:Relations and networks
In this short paper, I review the literature on social exchange networks, with specific attention to theoretical and experimental research. I indicate how social exchange theory is rooted in general social theory and mention a few of its main links to social network analysis and empirical network research. The paper provides an accessible entry into the literature on social exchange
Mindful networks? Navigating and negotiating life and work in academia.
In this chapter I unpack my use of social networks (and social media) as a means of being more mindful about the role of research and scholarship in the construction of my academic identity. I have found it to be a restless, shifting identity that has to be carefully and continually navigated and negotiated. On the one hand, I explain how participation in social networks has actively shaped my sense of academic community and also the scholarly relationships that contribute strongly to my academic health and wellbeing. On the other hand, I question the extent to which social networking and the use of social media in academia allow truly mindful practices to be enacted. For example, I sometimes worry that social networking for academic purposes through social media contributes to the acceleration of higher education practice – never switching off, always being connected – potentially further exacerbating academics’ levels of labour, stress and pressure. By reflecting upon and analysing my scholarly use of Twitter and Instagram I explore how this practice (usually) keeps me acting mindfully as an academic and evaluate the extent to which it enables me to engage better in the complex cognitive and emotional demands of working in higher education. Finally, I reflect upon my recent change of both role and institution, which saw me unexpectedly and temporarily suspend my regular use of social media for academic purposes.N/
Social Networks among Elderly Women: Implications for Health Education Practice
The general aim of the present study was to examine and help clarify the properties of the distinctions between social networks and social support, their relationship to health status, and their impli cations for health education practice. More specifically, a secondary data analysis was conducted with 130 white women, community resi dents, between the ages of 60 and 68, which examined the relationship between psychological well-being and social network characteristics. These characteristics are categorized along three broad dimensions: structure—links in the overall network (size and density); interaction— nature of the linkages themselves (frequency, homogeneity, content, reciprocity, intensity, and dispersion); and functions which networks provide (affective support and instrumental support). A Customer Perspective on Product Eliminations: How the Removal of Products Affects Customers and Business Relationships
Regardless of the apparent need for product
eliminations, many managers hesitate to act as
they fear deleterious effects on customer satisfaction and loyalty. Other managers do
carry out product eliminations, but often fail
to consider the consequences for customers
and business relationships. Given the relevance
and problems of product eliminations, research
on this topic in general and on the
consequences for customers and business
relationships in particular is surprisingly scarce. Therefore, this empirical study explores how and to what extent the elimination of a
product negatively affects customers and
business relationships. Results indicate that
eliminating a product may result in severe
economic and psychological costs to customers,
thereby seriously decreasing customer satisfaction and loyalty. This paper also shows
that these costs are not exogenous in nature. Instead, depending on the characteristics
of the eliminated product these costs are
found to be more or less strongly driven by a
company’s behavior when implementing the
elimination at the customer interface
Brokering Trust to Enhance Leadership: A Self-Monitoring Approach to Leadership Emergence
What kind of person is likely to emerge as an informal leader in the workplace? Experimental research shows that high self-monitors—who tend to adjust their attitudes and behaviors to the demands of different situations—emerge as informal leaders in temporary groups. By contrast, low self-monitors—who tend to be true to themselves in terms of consistency in attitudes and behaviors across different situations—are less likely to emerge as leaders. But this prior research does not address the criticism that the emergence of high self-monitors as leaders represents ephemeral impression management in the context of laboratory experiments. To address this issue, we collected and analyzed data from a 116-member high-technology firm. Our results show that self-monitoring is related not only to leadership emergence, but also to the provision of advice to co-workers. Further, people who occupied brokerage positions (being trusted by those who did not trust each other) tended to be seen as leaders if they were high rather than low self-monitors. From these results, we build a picture of the high self-monitoring emergent leader as someone who notices problems and ameliorates them through the provision of advice and the brokerage of relationships across social divides. The occupation of a structurally advantageous position may well be more advantageous for some (i.e., high self-monitors) relative to others (i.e., low self-monitors)
Networks or structures? : organizing cultural routes around heritage values : case studies from Poland
The most common way of managing cultural heritage recently takes form of cultural routes as they seem to offer a new model of participation in culture to their recipients; they are often a peculiar anchor point for inhabitants to let them understand their identity and form the future; they offer actual tours to enter into interaction with culture and history, to build together that creation of the heritage, which so is becoming not only a touristic product, but, first of all, the space for cultural, social and civic activity. Yet, so far, according to what we know, the research problem concerning the method of cultural route organization (points on the route) into solid structures or more of the networked nature, has not been deliberated. A question arises, what values are brought by routes and how to organize routes to be the carriers of the values important for communities, where routes are functioning. And, as a consequence, if, from the point of view of the values of local communities, organizing solid route structures or organizing more widely-spaced, network-based routes would bring effects and what those effects would be. Thus, the posed question is of course scientifically imprecise because a network is a type of structure but presents a given direction for the development of cultural route structures. Our objective here is to present a certain solidity and rigidity of structure with dynamic and smooth understanding of the network. The research presented in the article is based on 3 case studies. We have selected for this purpose the three largest cultural routes in Poland, organized to various degrees.
